鲍勃·迪伦于1965年6月从英国游历归来，这次旅行使他备受折磨，筋疲力尽。当时，他写了一首长长的韵文，这首歌中带有敌意的歌词就源于此。经过大量改编，几周之后，“Like a Rolling Stone”进行录音，计划收录在即将发布的专辑Highway61 Revisited里。经过两天的艰难试音，迪伦才终于掌握了这首歌的精髓所在。试样时有3/4的时间都不够成功。直到迪伦尝试用摇滚模式演奏这首歌时，才有了突破。新手录音师Al Kooper即兴创作了这张唱片中广为人知的管风琴即兴重复段。但是哥伦比亚唱片公司不仅因这首歌超过六分钟而不满意，也不喜欢它过于浓厚的电子感，因而犹豫不决，不愿发行。一个月后，这首歌的一个副本泄露到一个新的流行音乐俱乐部，被一些有影响力的电台DJ听到了，促成了这首歌作为单曲发行。尽管广播电台不愿播放时间这么长的歌曲，“Like a Rolling Stone”依然在美国音乐排行榜上高居第二，并在全球引起轰动。
